Pine-soot ink powder, chopped carbon fiber, copper, acrylic, amplifier, bone conduction speaker

A circular panel made of layers of pine-soot and chopped carbon, with copper embedded where the black center meets the outer ring. The surface was shaped on a potter’s wheel. Its concentric grooves open from a still black vortex at the center toward the copper edge.

The work both receives and emits sound. A bone-conduction speaker sends vibrations through the panel, while a piezo pickup catches the faint sound made when a viewer, brushes the surface.

The copper stands for the implant embedded in my body. The black pine-soot ground represents silence and the carbon of the flesh. Sound arises from silence and returns to it.

No two people touch the panel in the same way, so no two people hear the same thing. The differences in what each person perceives can never be fully understood, but they can be shared.

I am moving from expressing my own perception toward awakening perception in the viewer’s body. This circular form is the beginning of a series.
