Sound Mask /
In this Noh mask work, I sought to express the loss of identity in contemporary society. I have long struggled with questions of identity—whether I am a hearing or deaf person and have continually sought to understand what it truly means to be me. This struggle has often felt like an internal dialogue with my reflection in a mirror. The sound-inspired colors painted across the mask’s surface act like a plaster wall, shutting out the outside world. They cover the mask completely, yet they also suggest a kind of armor that we all create to protect the pain of identity loss hidden deep within our hearts.
